Spirit levels for small home projects
A spirit level helps compare a surface with horizontal or vertical, but its length and condition need to suit the task. For small home projects, a readable, checked tool is more useful than a long list of extra markings.

Choose a length for the actual contact
Consider what the level will rest against: a short picture frame, a shelf or a longer furniture edge. A compact level fits confined spaces, while a longer body spans more of an extended surface. Neither size replaces the other in every situation. Check that the intended measuring face can make stable contact without resting on a projecting screw or decorative molding.
A level indicates the surface it touches, so choose that surface deliberately. A cabinet's decorative top may differ from the structural reference described in its installation instructions. Follow the furniture or fixture maker's procedure and do not assume that every visible edge is the correct point to measure. Mark the chosen reference on a sketch if the task has several parts.
Inspect and check the tool
Look for a bent body, damaged measuring face or a vial that is difficult to read. Clean the contact surface before use so debris does not lift one end. A tool that has been dropped deserves a check before it is used to set out a line. Do not treat an apparently centered bubble as proof that the instrument is undamaged.
STABILA publishes a reversal check in which the level is placed on a marked reference, turned and returned to compare readings. Use the illustrated procedure for the relevant vial and the manufacturer's stated tolerances. Its guidance also notes that a bent profile is not suitable for that check. If readings disagree, obtain service advice rather than averaging them into a guess.
Make the reading repeatable
Hold the level steadily without forcing it against an uneven surface. Read from a position where the bubble and reference lines are clear. Repeat the placement at the same point to see whether contact is consistent. If the surface rocks beneath the tool, investigate the contact points instead of pressing harder until the bubble moves where you want it.
For a longer object, follow the installation method for checking more than one position. A short level placed at one end does not describe every part of a bowed shelf. Keep measurement separate from the suitability of wall fixings or the load capacity of furniture; a level reading does not establish that the installation is structurally adequate.
Store it as a measuring tool
Keep the level where heavy tools cannot bend or strike it. Clean residues using the permitted method and protect any magnetic contact surface from attached debris before the next job. Record the model if service information may be needed. A simple level that remains straight, readable and checked can support many small projects without pretending to replace the other installation checks those projects require.
