Window squeegees and blade replacement

A window squeegee relies on a continuous working edge. Before replacing the whole tool, check whether the blade is clean, undamaged and available as a matching spare for the handle you already like.

Choose width around the panes

Measure the clear glass area between frames and dividers. A broad blade can cover a large pane efficiently but be awkward on narrow sections. Check whether the handle angle allows the blade to reach the lower edge without the frame blocking it. The widest tool is not always the easiest to control on a household window.

Consider the reachable working position. Use the tool only from a stable, suitable place and do not lean out of a window to gain an extra strip of coverage. If a compatible extension is needed, verify the connection and intended use. A handle that merely fits into another tube is not a documented extension system.

Inspect the edge before blaming technique

Look along the blade for nicks, distortion or particles. A small irregularity can interrupt its contact with the glass. Clean the tool according to its instructions and inspect again. Do not cut or reshape the edge unless the manufacturer explicitly provides that procedure; an improvised trim may create a different uneven section.

Read the replacement-part information for the exact model. Leifheit's 2in1 M squeegee, for example, is described with a replaceable silicone lip. That is a useful maintenance feature, but it does not mean every visually similar blade fits. Record the model and spare reference before ordering a replacement by width alone.

Try the handle and cleaning routine

Hold the tool with the ordinary grip and check whether its angle can be adjusted where needed. A wet handle should remain controllable according to its design. If the head pivots, test whether it holds the chosen position during a normal pass. A joint that moves unexpectedly can make a clean edge difficult to use consistently.

Follow the window and tool instructions for the cleaning solution and amount of moisture. Keep the blade clean between passes as directed, and use an appropriate cloth for the remaining frame edges. A squeegee is one part of the process; it should not be expected to remove every deposit without the preliminary cleaning the surface requires.

Rinse and dry the blade before storage, and keep it from being pressed against a hard object that can deform the edge. A simple hanging position may protect the working lip better than a crowded drawer. Replace a damaged compatible blade when appropriate, retaining a handle that remains sound and comfortable to use.
